Professionally registered engineers and technicians earn more, according to The Engineer’s 2025 Salary Survey.
Of the 621 respondents, who work across 12 different sectors, 49 per cent were professionally registered. Based on this sample, registered engineers earn £7k more than respondents who are not professionally registered.
The energy; rail and civil; and structural sectors have the highest proportion of professionally registered respondents (70% and 68%, respectively), while telecoms utilities and electronics sectors (34%) have the lowest registration.
Commenting on the survey’s findings, Paul Bailey, CEO of the Engineering Council said: “I am pleased to see that professionally registered engineers continue to earn higher salaries. Professional registration is an internationally recognised assessment of your competence and reflects your professional dedication to employers, clients and safety.”
Paul continues: “Gaining a professional title demonstrates an individual’s commitment to the profession, as well as enhancing their career prospects and opening up promotion opportunities.”
The Engineering Council currently holds the national register of nearly 215,000 engineers and technicians professionally registered as:
- Engineering Technician (EngTech)
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)
And most recently, the Engineering Council has launched the Higher-Risk Building (HRB) registration, for engineers and technicians who work in the built environment sector, in particular on higher-risk buildings.
