The Engineering Council is pleased to announce that the first licence for Higher-Risk Building (HRB) registration has been awarded to the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE). The institution is the first professional engineering institution (PEI) to be granted a licence to register engineers and technicians who have been assessed against the Engineering Council’s new Standard, UK-SPEC HRB, which will officially launch later this year. …

Paul Bailey has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Council. He will be taking up the role in May following the retirement of Alasdair Coates. Paul has been the Deputy CEO & Operations Director at the Engineering Council for over eight years, prior to which he was Deputy CEO at the Royal Aeronautical Society. …

The Engineering Council has consulted with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) on the scope and implementation of the Professional Qualifications Act, which received royal assent on 28 April 2022. BEIS has confirmed that the Act does not currently cover professions that are voluntarily self-regulated by Royal Charter or other legislative means. …
