What/who inspired you to become an engineer?
I was inspired by the engineering ethos to serve. My education and job equipped me to address real-world problems, aiming to make a tangible difference. Becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng) will help to amplify this.
Please describe your role within the workplace.
In my role, I handle technical design and advisory, project management and quality control, alongside managing site work. I supervise young engineers and drawing technicians, providing them with technical guidance and training for future development to ensure our projects meet high standards.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
The most challenging aspect is resource management. Juggling multiple projects with varying deadlines requires meticulous scheduling and task assignment. With that being said, guiding younger engineers to assist in this dynamic environment has helped develop my leadership and organisational skills.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your role?
The most enjoyable aspect is collaborating with diverse internal and external team members. Each member brings a unique background and experiences, providing multiple innovative solutions to engineering challenges. This collaboration enriches my technical knowledge and strengthens my management skills.
What is the biggest career highlight or achievement you’re most proud of?
My biggest career highlight was in my previous role at CLP Power Hong Kong Limited. I led projects, managed resources, and worked as an account manager to provide energy-saving solutions to client projects. I was involved in assessing funding for over 400 energy-efficient building projects. The initiative contributed to a 48GWh annual energy saving, supporting local decarbonisation.
Why did you choose to become professionally registered?
I chose to become professionally registered for self-recognition. Professional registration reinforces my responsibility in areas such as legal compliance, protecting professional reputation, managing conflicts of interest, maintaining confidentiality, and navigating legal processes in project work.
I would recommend professional registration because…
The professional qualification can elevate your career, enhancing your work's quality and reliability. It builds your professional reputation, making you a more trusted figure among internal and external project team members.
What career advice would you give to your younger self?
Establish your engineering goals for the short, mid and long term. Equip yourself with knowledge and skills in your daily work, stay curious and open-minded. Enhance your coordination and problem-solving skills and build up a strong sense of sustainable engineering for the benefit of future generations.
Do you participate in mentoring, volunteering, or membership of other engineering groups?
I've volunteered with the IET Young Member team for the 2019 Young Professionals Exhibition and Competition in Hong Kong. The event allowed young engineers to showcase their projects. I helped judge entries, aiding in networking and innovation appreciation across diverse engineering fields.
