Standards Review 2026

The Standards Review 2026 will refresh our core standards: UK-SPEC, AHEP, AAQA, and the Regulations for Registration, to ensure they continue to reflect current engineering practice while remaining relevant, effective, and fit for purpose for the future.

This is in support of our mission to maintain internationally recognised standards of competence and commitment for the engineering profession.

May 2026 update

In summer 2025 the Engineering Council commenced Phase 1 of the Standards Review, delivering six thematic workshops focused on exploring how the next iteration of the Standard could and should be shaped.

The valuable feedback and outputs from these sessions informed the design of the Phase 2 workshops, which took a more targeted approach, focusing on specific areas of the Standards identified as requiring further development.

To date, twelve workshops have been delivered, drawing on valuable input from a diverse range of representatives across industry, academia, Licensees, and our partners.

We are now preparing to transition into the iterative drafting phase and will be convening three dedicated working groups to focus on the following areas:

  • Competences and Behaviours (UK-SPEC)
  • Learning Outcomes
  • Regulations for Registration

Working group participation is by invitation only. Due to the high level of interest and nominations, we are currently reviewing the composition of the Working Groups. Participants will be contacted shortly.

Wider consultation opportunities will be shared on this page in due course, and you can sign up for email updates on the Standards Review using the link below.

By signing up, you consent to receive updates and communications from the Engineering Council about the Standards Review. You can opt out whenever you wish by emailing professionalstandards@engc.org.uk

Please note that, until the drafting phase has concluded, no specific revisions have been formally agreed or implemented. Stakeholders are therefore advised to await formal updates from the Engineering Council in due course.
