Mutual Recognition Agreement

In January 2026 the Engineering Council signed the Admissions Pathway Agreement (APA) with the Italian certification body of the Consiglio Nazionale degli Ingegneri, CERTing, which facilitates the mobility and recognition of engineering professionals between the UK and Italy.

Recognising that the competence-based registration assessments for Engineering Council registration and CERTing Certification are substantially equivalent, this APA aims to minimise duplicating assessment processes for Chartered Engineers and Certified Expert Engineers.

These new APAs create streamlined processes for professional registration in a straightforward way, following the model adopted in similar agreements with Engineering New Zealand and Engineers Ireland, which aim to minimise duplication of assessment processes.

All Licensed Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) licensed by the Engineering Council to register engineers may participate in the agreement.

UK Chartered Engineers seeking registration with CERTing should download the appropriate application form found at the bottom of this page and send it to international@engc.org.uk together with the required documentation and written confirmation we have their permission to contact their Licensed PEI(s) to check their current standing with them.

Only applicants that underwent the full professional review (including the interview) as part of their CEng registration process can apply for the APA.

We will then send the validated form to CERTing who will work directly with the applicant from that point.

Italian engineering professionals should contact CERTing to initiate the application process for recognition in the UK.
