The Engineering Council Standards set out the competence and commitment required for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Engineering Technician (EngTech) or Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)
The two primary Standards are the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment (UK-SPEC) and the ICTTech Standard.
UK-SPEC
The purpose of UK-SPEC is to explain the competence and commitment requirements that engineering professionals must met to qualify for each professional title.
Each registration title requires demonstration of five broad areas:
-
-
Knowledge and understanding
-
Design, development and solving engineering problems
-
Responsibility, management and leadership
-
Communication and interpersonal skills
-
Professional commitment
-
The areas above are set out separately for each title and constitute the standards. To assist potential registrants, their advisers and professional review interviewers in deciding which title an individual should apply for, a comparison table of the three titles is included in UK-SPEC. A separate table with examples of evidence for each title is also available to support potential registrants.
UK-SPEC was most recently reviewed and updated in 2020, with the fourth edition published in August 2020, implemented by 31 December 2021.
Since its introduction in 2003, UK-SPEC has become well respected and recognised globally.
