Licensing professional engineering institutions

We raise standards through partnership.

The Engineering Council licenses professional engineering institutions (PEIs) to assess individuals for professional registration and recognise programmes of learning and development.

PEIs play a vital role in the regulation of the profession. They assess whether individuals and programmes meet the required standards, support registrants throughout their careers, and help ensure professional competence and conduct are upheld in practice.

Together, we provide the structure that enables professional standards to be applied consistently across a diverse and changing engineering profession.

PEIs cover the whole breadth of the engineering profession, including an array of specialist disciplines and features.

The relationship between the Engineering Council and the PEIs is foundational to the regulation of the profession, supported by clearly-defined governance arrangements, including Regulations for Registration.

To become professionally registered with the Engineering Council, you must first become a member of one of the Licensed PEIs or Professional Affiliates listed below.

Professional Affiliates

A Professional Affiliate is an incorporated body or engineering institution closely associated with the Engineering Council. Professional Affiliates are influential and often work to further the knowledge and understanding of a particular area or aspect of engineering and technology.

In addition to having access to key Engineering Council guidance, Professional Affiliates are also able to provide a pathway to professional registration for their members through setting up an agreement with a licensed professional engineering institution.
