The Engineering Council grants licences to professional engineering institutions (PEIs), allowing them to assess candidates for inclusion on the national register of professional engineers and technicians.
Some are also licensed to accredit or approve degrees, professional development schemes, qualifications or apprenticeships.
PEIs cover the whole breadth of the engineering profession, including an array of specialist disciplines and features.
As well as determining whether individuals or learning programmes have reached the required standards, these institutions also monitor the continuing professional development and conduct of registrants. This is vital for ensuring standards are upheld in practice.
The relationship between the Engineering Council and the PEIs is foundational to the regulation of the profession, supported by clearly-defined governance arrangements, including Regulations for Registration.
To become professionally registered with the Engineering Council, you must first become a member of one of the licensed professional engineering institutions (PEIs) listed below.
Professional Affiliates
A Professional Affiliate is an incorporated body or engineering institution closely associated with the Engineering Council. Professional Affiliates are influential and often work to further the knowledge and understanding of a particular area or aspect of engineering and technology.
In addition to having access to key Engineering Council guidance, Professional Affiliates are also able to provide a pathway to professional registration for their members through setting up an agreement with a licensed professional engineering institution.
