Pioneering Low-Carbon Concrete Innovation Wins 2026 Hawley Award
Published: 26/06/2026
Dr Fragkoulis Kanavaris CEng CSci CEnv FIMMM FICT CAPM has been awarded the 2026 Hawley Award, which includes a £5,000 cash prize and a medal, at the Engineers Trust Awards Dinner in June. The award honours the most outstanding engineering innovation that delivers demonstrable benefit to the environment and will help to achieve Net Zero Carbon by at least 2050.
Fragkoulis, a concrete materials specialist and concrete decarbonisation lead for Arup, has been recognised for his work on converting excavated soil into a high-performance cement replacement compatible with demanding infrastructure applications. This innovation directly addresses two of the most challenging decarbonisation issues in infrastructure: the carbon footprint of concrete and the environmental burden of excavation waste.
The Hawley Award, established in 2006, is presented by the Engineers Trust, the Trust Fund of the Worshipful Company of Engineers and acknowledges excellence in engineering, supporting engineering education and research.
