National Engineering Day 2026 - Different pathways, shared standards

Published: 04/11/2026

As National Engineering Day is celebrated across the UK on 4 November, the Engineering Council is highlighting the important role professional registration plays in recognising competence, commitment and professionalism across the engineering profession. The day celebrates the creativity, innovation and impact of engineering, while inspiring the next generation to explore engineering careers and pursue their professional ambitions.

From apprentices and graduates to experienced professionals, today's engineering workforce reflects the broad range of backgrounds, experiences and opportunities found across the profession. While there is no single route into engineering, professional registration provides a shared benchmark of professional standards, recognising engineers and technicians who have demonstrated their competence and commitment to ethical practice.

Through registration as Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Engineering Technician (EngTech), or Information and Communication Technology Technician (ICTTech), engineers and technicians demonstrate the professional standards and ethical practice that help build public confidence in the profession.

Professional registration shows Salma Al Arefi CEng MIET FWES SFHEA's commitment to engineering excellence and continual professional development. As an educator, she views it as an opportunity to lead by example and inspire future engineers.

Seema Tanwar EngTech MIET pursued professional registration to gain formal recognition of her expertise and demonstrate her commitment to high professional standards. The title indicates her dedication to continuous improvement, ethical practice and contributing to infrastructure development.

For Daniel Taylor IEng MIFireE, professional registration reflects a commitment to competence, accountability and high professional standards in fire engineering. It provides independent recognition of his skills and supports the responsible practice needed in a discipline that directly affects public safety.
