Engineering Council begins review of licensing processes

Published: 01/10/2026

The Engineering Council has begun a substantive review of our licensing processes, examining how they work from end to end. The review will identify areas where processes may create duplication, ambiguity or unnecessary delay, while drawing on the experience of the organisations that use them in practice.

Behind every CEng, IEng, EngTech and ICTTech on the national Register is a Licensed Professional Engineering Institution (LPEI) that has assessed that individual against Engineering Council standards. Licensing is how we assure those assessments are carried out rigorously and consistently.

As the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession, the Engineering Council is committed to keeping its own processes under review. Good regulation means continually looking at how we operate and where we can improve.

The aim is to ensure our licensing processes remain robust, transparent, proportionate and consistent as the engineering profession evolves. This means focusing regulatory attention where assurance matters most, supporting effective assessment by Licensed Professional Engineering Institutions and Professional Affiliates, and sustaining public confidence in the national Register of professionally registered engineers and technicians.

The review is overseen by the Engineering Council’s Quality Assurance Committee and forms part of a broader programme of governance and regulatory review.

As part of the review, we have sent a survey to every Licensed PEI and Professional Affiliate, and we encourage them to complete it by the 23 October deadline. Their views and experiences of how our processes work in practice will provide valuable insight and support the continued development of a regulatory approach that works effectively for the profession and the public.
