CERTING and the Engineering Council sign Admissions Pathways Agreement to strengthen professional recognition between Italy and the UK
Published: 15/06/2026
CERTING and the Engineering Council are pleased to announce the formal signing of an Admissions Pathways Agreement that will facilitate professional recognition for qualified engineers between Italy and the United Kingdom.
The agreement establishes a framework through which engineers holding recognised professional registration or certification in one jurisdiction may apply for corresponding professional recognition in the other through streamlined admissions pathways. The arrangement reflects the shared commitment of both organisations to maintaining high standards of professional competence while supporting the international mobility of engineering professionals.
The agreement applies to engineers holding CERTING Advanced certification in Italy and Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration awarded through the Engineering Council's licensed professional engineering institutions in the United Kingdom. It provides a mechanism to minimise duplication in assessment processes, recognise the robustness of each organisation's professional standards, and enhance opportunities for engineers seeking professional recognition across both jurisdictions.
The framework has been developed following a detailed review of the respective competence assessment systems and is founded on the principle that professional recognition should be based upon demonstrated competence, commitment to professional standards, and continuing professional development.
Through this agreement, CERTING and the Engineering Council reaffirm their confidence in the quality and integrity of their respective professional registration and certification processes. The agreement also provides for continued cooperation in areas including standards development, information exchange, quality assurance, and professional conduct.
The signing ceremony, held in Salerno, represents an important milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the engineering professions of Italy and the United Kingdom. It reflects a shared vision of engineering as a global profession and recognises the growing importance of international cooperation in addressing complex societal, environmental, and technological challenges.
Speaking on behalf of CERTING and the Consiglio Nazionale degli Ingegneri (CNI), Ing. Tiziana Petrillo noted that the agreement will further support the international recognition of Italian engineering expertise while promoting opportunities for professional growth and collaboration.
Paul Bailey, CEO of the Engineering Council, welcomed the agreement as a significant step in strengthening professional links between the two countries and supporting the mobility of highly qualified engineers operating in an increasingly international environment.
The agreement is now in force and establishes the basis for ongoing cooperation in support of engineering excellence, public confidence, and the advancement of the profession in both jurisdictions.
