A new era for engineering talent: Expanding early technical pathways

The first Vocational Celebration Day, launched today by the Enginuity Group, places a welcome spotlight on skills, opportunity and the future of young people. This national day recognises the value of vocational pathways at a time when GCSE, A level and T level results - due later this month - will shape decisions about progression into further study, apprenticeships and employment. 

These celebrations come at a critical moment. Unemployment among young people has reached its highest level in a decade, with more than one million 16–24‑year‑olds not in employment, education or training (NEET). In response, the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has set out reforms designed to strengthen early technical pathways and routes that lead into skilled work.

The proposals include creating clear technical routes from Year 10 - set to be rolled out in September 2028 - supported by £287 million to fund over 22,000 additional college places. The Government also proposes to introduce apprenticeship bursaries of up to £4,500 to ease financial pressures, alongside enhanced practical skills development, hands on work experience and stronger links with local employers. Together, these measures aim to reduce unemployment among 16–24 year olds, widen access to technical education and build a more robust pipeline of future engineering talent.

By combining core academic subjects with employer‑designed technical learning, the reforms offer young people earlier, clearer and better‑supported routes into skilled careers. This is particularly important for engineering, where early engagement with technical subjects is strongly associated with progression into apprenticeships, further and higher education, and ultimately professional registration.

Establishing fair and accessible pathways into engineering and towards professional registration is crucial to maintaining confidence and trust in the engineering profession.

Vocational pathways help create a more inclusive talent pipeline by enabling students to develop technical skills sooner and progress smoothly into further study and work. Employer‑designed courses could strengthen local recruitment and address skills shortages, while increased financial and placement support for technical and apprenticeship routes could boost uptake and progression through Engineering Technician (EngTech) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) to Chartered Engineer (CEng). Reducing the emphasis on a ‘university first’ model would also attract a wider range of learners, improving access and diversity across the profession. High‑quality technical education and practical routes into work must remain a priority, recognising that university is not the only way to build a successful engineering career.
