What area or field of engineering do you work in? 

I work in fire engineering, focusing on designing safe buildings through fire-risk assessments, engineered solutions, and compliance with fire-safety regulations. My role involves modelling fire behaviour, supporting architects and contractors, and ensuring life-safety systems perform as intended. I bridge technical analysis with practical design to reduce risk and improve building safety.

Who has had the biggest influence on your journey as an engineer—and how? 

My biggest influence has been a senior fire engineer who mentored me early in my career. They taught me how to combine technical accuracy with practical judgement, emphasising clarity, ethics, and responsibility in every decision. Their guidance shaped my confidence, analytical approach, and commitment to continuous learning in a complex, evolving discipline.

What makes engineering more than just a job for you?

Engineering is more than a job because it allows me to contribute directly to people’s safety. Every design or assessment has a real-world impact, protecting lives and property. The problem-solving, teamwork, and constant learning make the work meaningful. Knowing my effort can prevent future harm gives me purpose and motivation every day.

How does your work contribute to a safer, fairer, or more sustainable world? 

My work ensures buildings are designed and operated with robust fire-safety measures, reducing risk for everyone who uses them. By developing efficient, performance-based solutions, I help create safer environments and support inclusive access.

What is the biggest career highlight or achievement you’re most proud of? 

I’m most proud of leading fire-safety input on a complex project where early modelling and collaboration prevented costly redesigns and significantly improved evacuation safety. Seeing the final building operate confidently and knowing my contribution directly enhanced occupant protection was a defining moment that reinforced my purpose as a fire engineer.

Why did you choose to become professionally registered? 

I pursued professional registration to demonstrate my competence, accountability, and commitment to high standards in fire engineering. It provides independent recognition of my skills, strengthens trust with clients and colleagues, and supports my development. Registration ensures I work responsibly and continuously improve within a discipline that directly affects public safety.

What does professional integrity mean to you in engineering? 

For me, professional integrity means living the values I see at Marshall Fire – integrity, honesty, accountability and competence. It’s about making evidence-based decisions, communicating transparently, and prioritising safety even when it’s challenging. These principles guide my judgement and ensure the engineering solutions I deliver truly protect people.

How has professional registration benefitted you or your employer? 

Professional registration has strengthened my credibility, enabling me to take on greater responsibility and contribute more confidently to projects. For my employer, it assures my competence, supports quality assurance processes, and enhances our team’s reputation. It also fosters a culture of professional development and consistent technical standards.

If you could change one perception about engineering, what would it be and why?

I’d change the perception that engineering is purely technical. It’s a deeply creative, people-focused profession that shapes how we live and stay safe. In fire engineering especially, we blend science with judgement, collaboration, and empathy. Recognising this broader impact could attract more diverse talent and strengthen the profession.

How do you hope to inspire the next generation of engineers?

I hope to inspire future engineers by sharing real examples of how our work protects communities and improves everyday life. By being approachable, encouraging curiosity, and showing that engineering welcomes diverse perspectives, I want young people to see a career where they can solve meaningful problems and make a lasting difference.
