Information for further education students

Choosing a recognised programme can give you a head start on your journey to becoming a technician or engineer.

Before you start

Many colleges offer a range of engineering qualifications, including vocational qualifications, T-levels and specialist work-related courses. If you are on an apprenticeship, you might be required to study at an FE college.

When choosing which engineering programme to study, it is worth keeping professional registration with the Engineering Council in mind.

Recognised programmes have been assessed as delivering all or some of the knowledge and understanding (learning outcomes) or competences required for professional registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) or ICT Technician (ICTTech)

This will make applying for professional registration more straightforward once you’ve gained the necessary knowledge, skills and work experience, and are ready to apply.

During your study

While studying, consider joining a licensed professional engineering institution (PEI) in your specific field.

Many offer either free or reduced rate membership for students and apprentices. You could join more than one. Becoming a member looks great on your CV and can provide you with connections and resources to help you to get the most from your studies.

The resources may include careers advice, newsletters, technical publications and other study materials, and in some cases, a mentor. Many provide access to networks and events where you could meet future employers.

Once you have completed your study

After completing further education there are various ways in which your career could develop. You may choose to:

  • Look for your first permanent post as a Technician or Engineer
  • Go on to an engineering apprenticeship
  • Study engineering at university

Your PEI will provide you with tailored advice, mentoring and guidance on the application process for professional registration.

Once you have completed further education and gained the relevant work experience, you should generally be eligible to apply for EngTech or ICTTech status depending on the sector you are in and which title your qualification is recognised for.
