Engineering Technicians (EngTech) apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems.

The demand for qualified technicians in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) is now well recognised by employers, the engineering profession and government. Evidence shows that the need to attract, recognise and increase the number of registered technicians throughout the UK is crucial in delivering economic growth.

Engineering Technicians are required to apply safe systems of work and are able to demonstrate:

  • Evidence of their contribution to either the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services
  • Supervisory or technical responsibility
  • Effective interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters
  • Commitment to professional engineering values

If this sounds like you then you deserve to see your professionalism recognised by gaining the EngTech title.

Eligibility

EngTech registration is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment.

Typically, applicants will have successfully completed an Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or other work-based learning programme approved by their Licensed PEI. This can lead directly to Engineering Technician registration.

Or, alongside appropriate working experience, they will hold:

  • A qualification, approved by a Licensed PEI, in engineering or construction set at level 3 (or above) in the Qualifications and Credit Framework/National Qualifications Framework for England and Northern Ireland; or at level 6 (or above) in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework; or at level 3 (or above) in the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales
  • Or equivalent qualifications approved by a Licensed PEI

To check whether your academic qualification is approved for EngTech, you should first search if your course is eligible.

Individuals without formal qualifications may also apply for EngTech registration by demonstrating they have acquired the necessary competence through substantial working experience.

UK-SPEC provides details of the competence required for EngTech registration. Institution staff will advise and support you throughout the registration process.

Technician Registration Initiatives

A range of technician registration initiatives has therefore emerged in recent years, to tackle the national shortage of professionally registered technicians with the title EngTech or ICTTech.

The Engineering Council is working on many of these initiatives with partners, including government and charity funded campaigns, professional engineering institutions, employers, Awarding Organisations and other relevant organisations and societies.
