The Engineering Council holds the UK Register of the engineers and technicians who have been assessed against our trusted Standards.

Professional registration demonstrates an engineering professional's competence (gained through experience) as well as their knowledge and understanding.

The engineers and technicians who achieve professional registration (registrants) are skilled professionals who have chosen to have their expertise independently verified by being assessed against our Standards and awarded one of our professional titles.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng)
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech)
  • Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)

They are able to use post nominal letters after their names to show they hold one of these legally protected titles, demonstrating their professional status.

These protected professional titles mark a person out as a competent and committed engineering professional.

The award and retention of these titles ensures that employers, government and the public – both in the UK and overseas – have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of engineers and technicians on the Register.

Registrants also commit to ongoing learning through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and to working in an ethical and sustainable way.

We work in partnership with professional engineering institutions to ensure the integrity of the Register as a benchmark for engineering competence and commitment.
