Text reads "CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2023" on a purple backgroundThe Engineering Council would like to congratulate the all-registrant shortlist for the ‘Engineer of the Year’ category in the CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2023.

This is a new category, introduced for 2023 by licensed professional engineering institution the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). Complimenting the #CIBSE125Challenges, launched by CIBSE President Kevin Mitchell, ‘Engineer of the Year’ invites nominations for practicing engineers who are committed to creating and maintaining a sustainable built environment.

By becoming professionally registered, all Chartered Engineers (CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Engineering Technicians (EngTech) have demonstrated their competence and commitment against an internationally recognised standard. This includes a personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment.

Shortlisted entrants for ‘Engineer of the Year’ are:

  • Michelle Agha-Hossein CEng MCIBSE, Senior Sustainability Consultant - Buro Happold
  • Graeme Brady BEng CEng MIET, Engineering Manager - NG Bailey
  • Mary-Ann Clarke CEng MCIBSE, Regional Director - AECOM
  • Philip Draper CEng MCIBSE, Managing Director - Twenty One Engineering
  • Stephen Hill CEng MIMeche MCIBSE, Associate Director in the Buildings Sustainability Team - Arup

The judges commented, “The nominees shortlisted delivered outstanding interviews, and the overall quality of entries was very high”.

The judges also noted that each nomination demonstrated a commitment to supporting the developments of fellow engineers, particularly those at the early stages of their careers. This supports CIBSE’s aims as an institution, but also CIBSE President Kevin Mitchell’s aims for his Presidential year.

All shortlisted candidates showed a dedication to tackling and mitigating the effects of climate change, by championing building performance and seeking innovative, dynamic, and collaborative ways to work.
