Revolutionary AI weather forecasting innovation wins 2024 MacRobert Award

Published: 30/07/2024

MacRobert AwardGoogle DeepMind's pioneering AI weather forecasting technology, GraphCast, has been awarded the 2024 MacRobert Award, the UK's most prestigious engineering innovation prize. The team behind this pioneering innovation was presented with the MacRobert Award gold medal and a £50,000 prize at the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) awards dinner, held at the Peninsula Hotel in London earlier this month.

DeepMind has been recognised by the RAEng for its groundbreaking innovation which represents a major leap forward in weather forecasting. By leveraging advanced machine learning algorithms and vast data sets, its AI-powered technology provides highly accurate and timely weather predictions. These improved forecasts have the potential to reduce the impact of severe weather events, ultimately saving lives.

The complete list of the MacRobert Award-winning Google DeepMind team is:

• Ferran Alet PhD MSc, Research Scientist
• Peter Battaglia PhD BA, Research Scientist
• Meire Fortunato PhD, Staff Research Scientist
• Remi Lam PhD MS, Staff Research Scientist
• Shakir Mohamed PhD BSc, Director of Research
• Alexander Pritzel PhD MSc, Senior Staff Research Scientist
• Alvaro Sanchez-Gonzalez PhD MSc, Staff Research Engineer
• Jacklynn Stott MBA BA, Research Program Manager
• Matthew Willson MSc, Staff Research Engineer
• Peter Wirnsberger PhD, Staff Research Scientist

Now in its 55th year, the MacRobert Award honours UK engineering excellence and innovation that continue the UK’s distinguished engineering heritage.

Professor Sir Richard Friend FREng FRS, Chair of the MacRobert Award judging panel at RAEng, said “GraphCast is a great example of how engineering innovation can be an important driving force behind economic growth and a sustainable future. In an age of climate change and increasingly volatile weather events, accurate forecasting is an essential tool that can benefit society worldwide.”
