Pioneer in carbon capture technology receives prestigious Hawley Award

Published: 25/07/2024

Dr Francisco Garcia Garcia has been awarded the 2024 Hawley Award, which includes a £5,000 prize and a medal, at a ceremony held at Carpenter's Hall in London last month. The award honours the most outstanding engineering innovation that delivers demonstrable benefit to the environment and will help to achieve Net Zero Carbon by at least 2050.

Dr Garcia Garcia, a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Reaction Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, has been recognised for his innovative hollow fibre-based technology for on-board carbon capture in marine vessels. This technology uses a high surface area material to capture and store CO2 emissions for later processing, supporting stricter marine emission regulations and strengthening the UK's leadership in emission control during the transition to renewable energy.

The Hawley Award, established in 2016, is presented by the Engineers Trust, the Trust Fund of the Worshipful Company of Engineers and acknowledges excellence in engineering, supporting engineering education and research.
