Titles of accredited or approved programmes – reminder

Published: 08/11/2022

Line illustration of a mortarboardThe Engineering Council has issued a statement on the titles of accredited or approved programmes (including degrees, apprenticeships and other qualifications) which can be found under ‘Useful Documents’ on the page Information for Higher Education providers.

While the Engineering Council recognises that awarding organisations have the right to determine what they call their programmes and qualifications, the Engineering Council and professional engineering institutions (PEIs) also have a duty to check that any information about qualifications that are recognised as supporting professional registration is clear. This includes a duty to request that any information that could be misleading is corrected. Reference to recognition (ie accredited/accreditation), within programme titles, may be misleading. Programmes with such titles must not be accredited or approved on behalf of the Engineering Council.

The short statement document gives examples of the types of language which may be misleading in programme titles and sets out the reasons these references are potentially misleading. Read the statement on degree titles.
