What/who inspired you to become an engineer? 
My family own a local fabrication and welding business in Grimsby which was once led by my grandad John Strandt. The business and family legacy fueled my drive to pursue an apprenticeship when leaving school and now a career in engineering.

Please describe your role within the workplace
I’m responsible for providing welding specialist support for Prax Lindsey Oil refinery by ensuring the efficient execution of fabrication, welding, and quality related processes. My main objective is to ensure all assets meet code and contractual requirements to ensure the refineries’ integrity and longevity are maintained.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role? 
The most challenging part of my role lies in its niche subject matter, which may not be widely understood or appreciated by everyone. This presents unique challenges that require creative problem-solving and perseverance.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your role? 
The most enjoyable aspect of my role is the satisfaction of contributing to efforts that uphold the quality and overall integrity of the refinery. Working as a team, we continuously explore ways to innovate and enhance overall efficiency by making meaningful improvements.

What is the biggest career highlight or achievement you’re most proud of? 
My greatest achievement so far has been becoming the Welding Specialist at Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery and being given the opportunity to pursue my Masters degree in welding engineering at Cranfield University. This milestone has been a goal I've been working towards for many years.

Why did you choose to become professionally registered? 
I attained professional registration to demonstrate my dedication to both the company and the industry. The registration also recognises your entire portfolio in terms of experience, qualifications, skills, and understanding within the field.

What career advice would you give to your younger self? 
Patience is key to achieving the career you desire, as long as you pay attention, keep learning, and persist. While being the smartest isn't necessary, hard work and resilience will serve you better than intelligence alone.
