On 23 June 2017 a raft of activities and celebrations took place across the country to mark and celebrate the contribution of women to engineering.

As part of the 2017 International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) worked with the Telegraph to compile a list of the Top 50 Women in Engineering under 35. It features the UK’s top rising female stars of engineering chosen from more than 500 nominations.

Kirsten Bodley, Chief Executive of WES, which founded the annual celebration four years ago, said: “We had a very high response to the campaign this year and were hugely impressed with the entries. This list of inspirational younger women shows the breadth and depth of talent and innovation across all engineering sectors. It is a great way of encouraging the next generation to enter the engineering and allied sectors and for women to succeed there.” 

The full list was chosen by a panel of seven judges and printed in a Telegraph supplement on 23 June. The list, which includes young women from across all engineering sectors, can also be viewed at inwed.org.uk/top-50-women-in-engineering  

​Also in celebration of International Women in Engineering Day, the Royal Academy of Engineering launched a new video entitled Women in engineering: let’s change the world. It profiles five inspiring women engineers from Mozambique, Uganda, Palestine, Germany and the UK. All five role models have a fascinating story to tell about their different routes into engineering. The video also highlights the important role both men and women can play as allies to help improve diversity and inclusion in the profession. Please click to view the videos

INWED was initially established as a national day by WES in 2014. It celebrates the achievements of women in engineering from all backgrounds on an international scale, and encourages more girls to consider a career in the field.
