The Engineering Council is delighted to announce that one of its Trustees, EUR ING Alastair Revell CEng CITP FBCS FRSA FIAP, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Plymouth for his outstanding contribution to computer science education and the IT profession.

In addition to his role as Chairman and Managing Consultant of Revell Research Systems, Alastair is the Immediate Past President of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT. He was presented for the Honorary Doctorate of Science degree by Professor Bogdan Ghita at a graduation ceremony held at the university on 23 October.

Alastair is the driving force behind ‘Chartered Week’, an annual national campaign highlighting the impact of chartered professionals across disciplines. The 2024 event brought together more than 40 professional bodies to champion shared standards of competence, ethics and service to the public.

A long-standing advocate for professional registration, Alastair’s work in developing professional standards in IT, digital and computing has been instrumental in strengthening the governance and standards frameworks that underpin public trust in these sectors.

Following the presentation of his honorary degree, he said: “It is a tremendous honour to be recognised by the University of Plymouth, especially for my advocacy of chartered professionalism in the IT, computing and digital sectors. In the wake of the Post Office scandal, increasing cyber-attacks and the inexorable rise of AI, it is critical that society can readily identify highly competent and ethical engineers and practitioners in these sectors because so much of modern life now depends on them.”

The Engineering Council extends its warmest congratulations to Alastair on this well-deserved recognition of his leadership and dedication to advancing professional standards in IT and engineering.
