Engineering Council highlights flexible programme adjustments for exceptional circumstances

In response to the current situation affecting parts of the Middle East and recognising that some governments in the region have directed universities to transition to online learning, the Engineering Council acknowledges that higher education providers with accredited provision in affected areas may need to introduce temporary adjustments to programme delivery and assessment arrangements.

Section 8g of the Engineering Council’s Programme Recognition Handbook outlines the requirements relating to changes to recognised programmes when exceptional events affect delivery or assessment. The Handbook is available to download on our website.

The Engineering Council does not prescribe specific delivery methods for recognised programmes; its priority is to ensure that programmes continue to meet the learning outcomes and standards required for registration as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Providers anticipating disruptions that may affect recognised provision - including international or franchised arrangements - are strongly encouraged to engage proactively with their relevant Licensed professional engineering institution. Clear documentation, transparent decision-making, and a robust audit trail are essential to maintain confidence in the programme and its recognition.

The Engineering Council remains committed to working constructively with the sector to raise standards while recognising the challenges that exceptional circumstances may present.
