The Engineering Council would like to congratulate Amy Smith IEng MIMechE, Senior Aerospace Engineer with the Royal Navy, on receiving the 2025 Baroness Platt of Writtle Award. The announcement was made at a presentation ceremony in London in June.

Amy currently leads Quality Assurance and Health & Safety for the Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Squadron. Her responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, managing incident reporting and appropriate escalation, and driving continuous improvements in safety procedures.

The judges were impressed with her technical knowledge, her commitment to the promotion of engineering, and by her strong commitment to safety and accreditation, which impacts the broader engineering community.

Since joining the Royal Navy in 2006 as an Aircraft Engineering Technician, Amy trained at HMS Raleigh and HMS Sultan before being assigned to 702 Squadron, where she worked on Lynx helicopters.  She later became the first female Wildcat Senior Maintenance Rating on 815 Naval Air Squadron, the principal engineer responsible for maintaining the aircraft, applying her skills and knowledge in real-world operational settings.

After passing the Admiralty Interview Board assessment to become an Aircraft Engineering Officer, she now plays a key role in supporting professional accreditation within the military, guiding individuals on becoming an Engineering Technician (EngTech), advocating for professional recognition and continued education. Passionate about inspiring future engineers, she also takes part in outreach programmes that promote engineering as a career.

Amy was nominated by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Although currently deployed in Japan and unable to attend the ceremony in person, Amy will be officially presented with an engraved medal, certificate, and £1,000 cash prize at a future ceremony.

The award is named after Baroness Platt of Writtle CBE FREng, recognising her contributions to the engineering profession, particularly Incorporated Engineers (IEng). It is presented by the Charitable Trust Fund of the Worshipful Company of Engineers, through their trust fund The Engineers Trust, in conjunction with The Dulverton Trust and the Engineering Council.
