What/who inspired you to become an engineer?

My father was the key inspiration behind my journey into engineering. He noticed my natural talent and passion for drawing from a young age and encouraged me to explore design as a career. His support guided me toward the engineering field, where I found the perfect balance between creativity and technical precision, allowing me to bring ideas to life.

Please describe your role within the workplace.

As a Principal BIM Modeller, I support the Reinforcement Concrete Detailing (RCD)   Manager and project leads by delivering high-quality design solutions and managing coordination activities. My role includes preparing feasibility studies, overseeing design documentation, and resolving on-site queries. I streamline workflows using macros and 3D visualisations, guide drafting teams, and develop standard templates. Additionally, I contribute to internal audits, mentor new joiners, and promote continuous improvement, ensuring efficient project delivery and adherence to safety and quality standards.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

The most challenging aspect of my role is balancing accuracy with efficiency. I must ensure every design is precise and compliant while meeting tight deadlines. Coordinating with teams across time zones requires me to stay organised and proactive. I also translate complex design intent into buildable solutions, mentor team members, and manage quality, safety, and audit responsibilities.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your role?

The most enjoyable aspect of my role is seeing my designs come to life in real-world structures. I love the balance between creativity and technical precision, especially when solving design challenges. Collaborating with diverse teams and mentoring new members also adds a sense of growth and fulfilment to my work.

What is the biggest career highlight or achievement you’re most proud of?

The biggest career highlight I'm most proud of was being appointed Project Coordinator for the high-profile Shooterway Berkhamsted–Elysian project. My early involvement, problem-solving, and sustainable design solutions contributed to the project's success. This led to my promotion to RCD Coordinator and the Employee Excellence Award in 2014.

Why did you choose to become professionally registered?

I chose to become professionally registered to formally recognise my skills and experience in engineering. It allowed me to validate my expertise, demonstrate professionalism to clients and colleagues, and align with the values of continuous development and accountability. It also opens up career progression opportunities and enhances my contributions to the engineering community.

I would recommend professional registration because…

I would recommend professional registration because it provides formal recognition of your skills and expertise and enhances your credibility with clients and colleagues. It demonstrates a commitment to high standards, continuous development, and accountability. Additionally, it opens up career advancement opportunities and allows you to contribute meaningfully to the broader engineering community.

What career advice would you give to your younger self?

I would advise my younger self to embrace every learning opportunity, stay open to feedback, and be patient with growth. Building a strong foundation in both technical skills and soft skills is essential. Lastly, never underestimate the value of networking and seeking mentorship to guide your career path.

Do you participate in mentoring, volunteering, or membership of other engineering groups?

Yes, I actively  mentor team members, helping them grow professionally and guiding them through the registration process. I also engage in internal knowledge-sharing sessions and contribute to best practice discussions. Additionally, I maintain membership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE),  the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and  attend industry events.

If relevant, please list three favourite projects you have worked on

  1. Shooterway Berkhamsted–Elysian Project: As the Project Coordinator, I played a key role in detailing and delivering sustainable design solutions, contributing to the project's success, and earning recognition from both the client and my employer.
  2. Infinity - Structures RC Detailing: I led the coordination of complex structural detailing, resolving site challenges and ensuring timely, cost-effective solutions while collaborating with international teams.
  3. Wave City Centre Noida: I focused on sustainable infrastructure, where I developed green building solutions and promoted environmentally conscious design, helping reduce the project’s overall carbon footprint.
