In June 2012 the Engineering Council and the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) signed an agreement to facilitate mobility of engineering professionals through streamlined professional body and registration processes.

This agreement was re-signed for a further period of five years in June 2018. The revised agreement also reflects the fact that, in 2017, IPENZ changed its name to Engineering New Zealand and launched new membership classes and post-nominal designations.

The agreement applies to Engineering Council registrants when applying for the equivalent membership and registration with Engineering New Zealand. Non-registrants who are members of participating Licensed Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) and have been awarded a professional grade of membership based on demonstration of competence at a level equivalent to that required for registration, are also eligible for consideration under the agreement.

Likewise, Engineering New Zealand members and registrants can benefit from the agreement when applying for equivalent membership of one of the participating Licensed PEIs and for registration with the Engineering Council.

The agreement provides exemption from some components of the assessment process, where an equivalent procedure has been completed by the home institution. In some cases, with the applicant’s permission, the home institution may be asked to provide details of its assessment, for example where this has included further or work-based learning.

UK engineering professionals seeking membership of Engineering New Zealand or registration in New Zealand should contact Engineering New Zealand for further details. New Zealand engineering professionals should contact the relevant Licensed PEI.
