The International Professional Engineer (IntPE) register was launched in late 2002 by the Engineers Mobility Forum (EMF).
In 2012, the EMF was renamed the International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA). Each member of the IPEA holds its own section of the IntPE register. This is denoted by the addition of a jurisdiction identifier to the IntPE designatory letters.
The Engineering Council is the UK member of the IPEA.
The IntPE(UK) registration is open to Chartered Engineers (CEng) who are registered with the Engineering Council and who meet the following requirements:
- An accredited degree recognised under the Washington Accord, or equivalent academic qualification
- Equivalent academic qualifications are qualifications at the appropriate level attained through formal study or examination, such as an Engineering Gateways degree, second-cycle programme on the EEED or EUR-ACE® database or the Engineering Council Post-graduate Diploma when combined with either a Bachelor degree or the Engineering Council Graduate Diploma. Please contact your professional engineering institution for advice.
- The competence for independent practice as a professional engineer as exemplified by the International Engineering Alliance competency profile
- At least seven years post-graduate experience
- At least two years responsibility for significant engineering work
- Maintaining continuing professional development
Please note: Chartered Engineers who do not hold an accredited degree recognised under the Washington Accord, or equivalent academic qualification, are currently not eligible to apply for IntPE(UK) registration.
- Download the application form and guidance note from the useful documents section of this page
- Complete the application form
- Submit your application with evidence of the required experience and Continuing Professional Development (CPD), together with the registration fee of £105 to your Licensed Professional Engineering Institution (PEI)
- Please contact your Licensed PEI for details of payment options available
The current registration fee is £105.
IntPE(UK) registration is renewable every five years.
The renewal fee is currently £60 and requires demonstration of continued responsibility for significant engineering work and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the period.
In addition to the benefits gained through Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration IntPE(UK) offers:
- Letters after your name: eg J Smith CEng IntPE(UK)
- IPEA members may use the agreement to streamline admission to national registers in their jurisdiction in some circumstances. Any streamlining is at the discretion of the authority responsible for national registration in the jurisdiction and the Agreement member should be contacted to advise on what is available and any conditions applicable.
The Engineering Council and its fellow IPEA members are pursuing the possibility of future mutual recognition of professional titles, which would further enhance the benefits of IntPE(UK) qualification.
If you have gained your IntPE qualification from another IPEA jurisdiction, you can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer. To do this you will need to become a member of one of the UK’s Licensed Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs).
As part of your application, you will be required to submit the following documents:
- Detailed curriculum vitae of experience since graduation, indicating the levels of responsibility held
- Current record of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Evidence of IntPE registration (confirmation may be sought)
- References from two persons who have personal knowledge of your competence as a professional engineer
In recognition of the professional standing of IntPE, the Engineering Council allows a streamlined application process consisting of:
- Minimal scrutiny of academic qualification and professional development
- A professional review interview that will concentrate on competence to operate within a UK professional environment, rather than assessment of general competence
Some Licensed PEIs may have additional membership requirements to this streamlining.
