A former Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey, Steve sat on the Centre for Doctoral Training Steering Committee as well as supervising PhD and EngD applied research into the optimisation of lightweight materials and efficient manufacturing processes offering low environmental impact.
Before his time as a Visiting Professor, Steve was the Head of Design Integrity at Lockheed Martin UK, and was responsible for authorising and certifying the performance of all the company products. Steve is an Emeritus Fellow of Lockheed Martin, in recognition for work in Composite Material development, analysis, application and deployment.
Steve is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) and a Fellow of the Society of Operational Engineers (SOE), in addition to being Chair of the Environmental Professional Sector at the SOE. He is an active volunteer with the Engineering Council, liaising with the Joint Moderation Board (JBM) of professional engineering institutions in aligning professional registration practice and procedures, as well as being an approved Professional Registration Interview (PRI) assessor for CEng and CEnv. Steve is also an Honorary International Member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
Emma is Head of Engineering at Engineers Without Borders UK and a chartered civil engineer with six years of experience in the water industry in Scotland. Emma has recently worked on the Global Responsibility Competency Compass (launched June 2023), a tool for everyday engineering professionals, endorsed by the Engineering Council. She has worked on a variety of projects and has consistently believed in the importance of collaboration; impactful partnerships and the role engineering has to play in bettering our society. Her current role at Engineers Without Borders UK which she has held since June 2019, includes being responsible for driving forward and leading their work to embed globally responsible engineering into how engineering is taught and practiced.
Margaret is a chartered electrical/electronic and radio frequency (RF) engineer who has worked in the nuclear industry for over thirty years. Currently working at the international fusion project, ITER, in the south of France, she is responsible for the transmission line sub-system that forms part of the 20MW, 30 to 55MHz Ion Cyclotron Heating System and is ITER’s representative on the research board for The Welding Institute (TWI).
She has completed a variety of activities to encourage and support engineering throughout her career, such as working with schools as a STEM ambassador, setting up and running accredited professional development schemes and mentoring programs, and working with the IET in a number of areas, one being as a member of the Registrations and Standards committee.
Margaret is honoured to be joining the Engineering Council board and is interested in ensuring that the highest standard of engineering competence is achieved across all disciplines and at all levels, thus giving public confidence and respect in an industry and profession she thoroughly believes in.
Martin is an aeronautical engineer, with a background covering rotary and fixed wing aircraft as well as the lighter-than-air domain. Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and has served on Council, the Professional Standards Board, the Accreditation Committee and the End Point Assessment Standards Panel.
Martin sits on the Engineering Council’s International Advisory Panel and has been a Liaison Officer for the Institute of Measurement and Control and the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is involved with the International Engineering Alliance and has completed monitoring reviews on behalf of the Washington Accord and the International Professional Engineers Agreement.
He is also a Trustee of the Airship Heritage Trust and looks forward to offering his experience to the enhancement and development of engineering as a profession and the underpinning professional standards.
