Accreditation Review consultation

The Accreditation Review Working Group (ARWG) was set up to investigate and develop solutions for perceived inconsistencies in accreditation practice. The initial consultation which took the form of focus groups and structured interviews with stakeholders has identified some opportunities for improvement.

These were related to the preparation for, and conduct of, the visit, the documentation required, differing interpretations of Engineering Council guidance and different approaches to the accreditation of new courses. There were also concerns about the workload placed on Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), barriers to innovation and some confusion about the role of the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB)*.

In response to this, the working group, with the approval of the Engineering Council Board and Registration Standards Committee (RSC) developed initial proposed solutions, which have been refined and revised in the light of informal feedback received from the professional engineering institutions (PEIs) to date.  The Working Group is now seeking the views of PEIs and relevant HEIs on these proposals before producing recommendations.

The consultation document is available here for HEIs. The PEI consultation document is on our Partner Portal.

*The purpose of EAB is to provide a single point of contact to facilitate joint accreditation visits and to encourage consistent accreditation processes and good practice. More information about EAB can be found online at https://www.engc.org.uk/eab
