Published: 03/08/2022

"Sir Moir Lockhead Safety Award"The Sir Moir Lockhead Safety Award celebrates those who have made an outstanding contribution to safety in engineering.

Hosted by the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), the award is open to all those who have introduced safety initiatives or innovations, and who have demonstrated leadership and professionalism in the promotion of safety. Entries should clearly demonstrate professionalism in the prevention of safety incidents through their work to deliver tangible improvements in safety either within their company or within their industry.

DAF Trucks, the UK market leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles, will sponsor the award.

SOE Chief Operating Officer Daniel Moir said: “Safety is at the heart of our members’ work to maintain, inspect and manage equipment and machinery. Our members, and the wider engineering community, are encouraged to share with us their innovations on how they’ve made their workplaces safer.”

Previous winners of the award include:

  • EUR ING Professor Dave Cooper FSOE FBES, who won in 2021 for his extensive research, analysis, and recommendations on safety in the lift and escalator sector.
  • In 2018 Peter Warner EngTech MSOE MIRTE took home the coveted prize for his portable prototype device that would solve an ongoing problem of tyre inflation on fire appliances. Using Breathing Air (BA) cylinders, the device can inflate tyres to the required levels and help keep the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service (ECFRS) running reliably.
  • John Griffiths IEng MSOE MIPlantE, Operations and Maintenance Manager at Eye Power Station, won the inaugural award in 2017 for a complete redesign of safety practices at the Ipswich-based plant. A ‘power through safety’ system empowers workers to observe work practices and suggest improvements, resulting in over nine years without any lost-time injuries. It is the world’s first power station to generate electricity through the combustion of poultry litter.

SOE will also be hosting a free webinar, 'Taking care of people - The critical role of safety leadership and injury prevention, from 4pm on 18 August, at which speakers include Dr Judy Agnew, workplace safety author and a past recipient of the Sir Moir Lockhead Safety Award. Find out more and book your place on the SOE website.
