The Engineering Council was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dr Robert Hawley CBE BSc DSc FRSE FREng CEng FIMechE FInstP FIEE HonDEng HonDSc.
We all recognise the significant and lasting contribution made by Dr Hawley, to the Engineering Council as Chairman from 1999-2001, to the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) as President in 1996 and to the engineering profession as a whole through the work of the Hawley Group, including ‘The Universe of Engineering’ report and the creation of the Engineering Technology Board (ETB). His role in industry across his career was also considerable.
His work and his insight into the challenges facing the engineering profession set us on a path that continues today, with an Engineering Council whose core purpose is “the setting, auditing and regulating of standards for professional engineers”.
The announcement of his death placed by his family describes him as “Dearly loved husband of Pamela, father of Fiona & Nicholas, stepfather to Rachel & Philip and Grandpa Bob to Isabel, Jessica, Josie & Caitlin.”
