Reimagined Degree Map to drive sustainability and ethics in engineering

Published: 30/10/2024

In March this year, Engineers Without Borders UK launched the Reimagined Degree Map – an interactive guide, in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering, to support engineering departments navigate the decisions that are urgently required to prepare students for 21st-century challenges.

Engineers need to be skilled in acting sustainably, ethically, and equitably. The idea of 'global responsibility' in engineering stresses the importance of considering these three aspects together in decision making.

Consisting of six worksheets designed to promote meaningful dialogue within engineering departments, the Reimagined Degree Map guides teams through a structured four-hour journey. These exercises guide teams to recognise meaningful changes, enhance trust, encourage idea generation and foster a culture prepared to achieve ambitious goals.

The guide provides further detailed guidance, resources and teaching tools to support the interventions needed for change. This includes the ‘Sustainability Toolkit’ from the Engineering Professors Council, launched alongside the Map as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s ‘Engineers 2030’ initiative, aimed at preparing and supporting future engineers and technicians.

Endorsed by the Engineering Council, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining), the Map has been created through broad collaboration with educators, students, professionals, accrediting bodies and engineering institutions.

Since September 2023, over 200 participants from 25 universities and 22 companies have contributed to the map's development and testing through Engineers Without Borders UK’s Systems Change Lab. This programme, designed to bring together forward-thinking individuals and trial new educational approaches, has ensured that the Reimagined Degree Map is a practical and comprehensive resource, helping educators reshape engineering education to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
