Dual accreditation - reminder
Published: 08/11/2022
In 1999 the Engineering Council established a precedent that Bachelors programmes accredited as partially meeting Chartered Engineer (CEng) learning outcomes could be assessed for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration in the same way as an applicant holding a degree accredited for IEng.
To protect the international standing of CEng-accredited UK Honours degrees and more clearly differentiate between IEng and CEng accredited degrees, this policy was reinstated from 2021, revoking automatic dual accreditation.
This means that for accreditation visits held during or after the 2022-23 academic year, dual accreditation will not be automatic. Bachelors programmes accredited for CEng will continue to be treated by UK professional engineering institutions (PEIs) as a qualification that demonstrates knowledge and understanding for IEng.
If a programme is explicitly accredited for both IEng and partial CEng, both will be listed on our Course Search database as separate recognitions on the same programme record. For more information, including implementation periods, please see the policy statement on Dual Accreditation (under ‘Useful Documents’ on the page Information for Higher Education providers).
