Updates to compensation and condonement guidance
Published: 05/11/2021
A review of the Engineering Council’s ‘Compensation and Condonement Policy’ began one academic year after publication of the policy. The review working group considered all items of feedback received since the policy was published and concluded that:
- it had not seen strong evidence of a need to change the policy, or delay its implementation
- the original policy had struck a fair balance between the competing needs for consistent accreditation standards and for students to progress in their degree programmes
- enhancements to guidance would be useful to address some of the feedback.
Small changes have been made to the wording of the policy regarding the definition of compensation and condonement, mainly to add the clarifications included in the 2019 ‘Guidance Note on Compensation and Condonement’. (Reference to a paragraph number from an outgoing interation of the Engineering Council’s Registration Code of Practice (RCoP) has been removed.)
Enhancements have been made to this guidance note to clarify why the policy is needed, provide clarification and remove ambiguity. We have also added a new example that refers to the credit framework in Scotland.
It remains the case that ‘Compensation and Condonement’ policy requirements will apply to all students registering on year one of an accredited degree programme from September 2022, and all subsequent registrations.
