Professional Registration with ECUK

Professional registration with ECUK

demonstrates a high level of professional competence and commitment to the engineering profession.

There are three types of registration:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng)
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech)

Short profiles of each type of registration can be found here

Registration requires membership of a UK professional engineering institution that is licensed to assess the applicants for registration. A list of these institutions can be found here. Applications for registration are made to your Institution.

Registration requires you to demonstrate appropriate competences and commitment, which are set out in the UK-SPEC registration standards and made discipline-specific by the engineering institutions. The registration process assesses your education and professional development against these standards.

Education

The UK engineering profession has accredited a large number of academic qualifications, which either fully or partially satisfy the education requirements for registration. These can be searched here.

If your qualification was gained outside the UK and is not listed on our website, it can be recognised for registration if it is accredited by a signatory to the Washington Accord, Sydney Accord or Dublin Accord, or if it is a European qualification that is recognised by FEANI.

If you are registered on another country's section of the International Professional Engineers (IntPE) Register or hold a professional qualification that is recognised under European Directives 89/48/EEC or 92/51/EEC, your education and professional development can be recognised for registration.

If your qualifications are not recognised through any of the above means, they will be assessed against the exemplifying standard by your Institution. If this assessment identifies a requirement for further demonstration of education, your Institution will provide advice and guidance as to how this can be achieved.

Some institutions provide interim registration, which is available to applicants who have met the educational standards for registration, but have not yet gained the experience to be able to satisfy the professional competences for full registration. Interim registration does not confer any professional title.

MSc Professional Engineering

This offers a route to Chartered Engineer status for working engineers without the full exemplifying qualification who are unable to commit to full-time study. Alongside a learning contract approach, employees are able to develop the required competences for professional registration at the same time as meeting the learning outcomes for the award of the MSc. Further details are available in the Guide to the MSc Professional Engineering.

Professional Development

Some institutions operate formal professional development schemes whilst others provide mentors to assist you in your professional development with the aim of satisfying the registration requirements. Your Institution will be able to provide advice in this area.

Professional Review

The final stage of the registration process is the Professional Review. The Professional Review is based on your submitted registration application and a portfolio of supporting documentary evidence.

CEng and IEng registration will usually require a professional review interview, undertaken by two trained representatives of your institution.

The interview will be based on your submitted application and accompanying portfolio. The process of assessing your credentials can take up to six months, especially if an interview is required. Costs vary between £50-£400, depending on which institution you are a member of, the status of your qualifications and the registration category required (CEng, IEng or EngTech).

EngTech registration may include a professional review interview.

Most institutions can arrange the professional review interview to take place outside the UK , but London-based interviews are likely to be quicker to obtain.
