Professional Registration
Recognised standards. Trusted professionals.
Professional registration provides independent assurance that an engineer or technician has demonstrated the competence, commitment and ethical practice required by nationally recognised standards.
Awarded through Licensed professional engineering institutions against Engineering Council Standards, registration gives employers, clients, regulators, Government and the public confidence that professionally registered engineers and technicians have met recognised standards and are committed to maintaining them through continuing professional development.
As engineering takes on increasingly complex challenges, professional registration provides a trusted benchmark that supports better decisions, strengthens public confidence and helps ensure engineering is delivered responsibly.
Registration is open to competent, practising engineers and technicians from all routes into the profession. What matters is the standard you have reached — and your commitment to maintaining it.
How to become professionally registeredThe engineers and technicians who achieve professional registration (registrants) are skilled professionals who have chosen to have their expertise independently verified. They are able to use post nominal letters after their names to show they hold one of these legally protected titles, demonstrating their professional status:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
- Engineering Technician (EngTech)
- Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)
Start your journey by joining a Licensed Professional Engineering Institution, who can guide and support you towards professional registration.
