About IntPE
The International Professional Engineer
(IntPE) qualification was launched in late 2002 by the Engineers
Mobility Forum (EMF), which is part of the International
Engineering Alliance (IEA). The qualification is awarded by each
member jurisdiction followed by jurisdictional identifier, eg IntPE
(UK) for the UK.
Benefits of IntPE professional qualification
In addition to the benefits gained through CEng professional
qualification (an eligibility requirement), IntPE (UK) offers
further benefits:
- Letters after your name, eg J. Smith CEng IntPE (UK)
- Easier admission to National Registers of IntPE register member
jurisdictions
The Engineering Council and its fellow EMF members are pursuing
the possibility of future mutual recognition of professional
titles, which would further enhance the benefits of IntPE
qualification.
Eligibility
The IntPE (UK) qualification is open to UK-registered Chartered
Engineers who meet the following requirements:
- seven years post-graduate experience
- two years responsibility of significant engineering work
- maintaining continuing professional development
Please note: Chartered Engineers registered through the Mature
Candidate Route, Career Appraisal Route, Senior Route or the
Technical Report Option are currently unable to apply for IntPE
(UK) qualification.
Although the Engineering Council recognises the competency of
these engineers, the International Register of Professional
Engineers Agreement does not yet accept applicants through
competency routes. The Engineering Council is hopeful that this
situation will change, but this is likely to take a significant
period of time.
How to register
- Download the application form and guidance note
- Complete the application form
- Submit your application with evidence of the required
experience and CPD, plus £90 registration fee through your
professional body (cheque made payable to your professional
body)
Registration is renewable every five years at a fee of £50, and
requires demonstration of continued responsibility of significant
engineering work and CPD for the period.
Engineers coming to the UK
If you have gained your IntPE qualification from another
jurisdiction, you can apply for the Chartered Engineer professional
qualification.
In recognition of the professional standing of IntPE, the
Engineering Council offers a streamlined application process
consisting of:
- minimal scrutiny of academic qualification and professional
development
- a professional review interview that will concentrate on
competence to operate within a UK professional environment, rather
than assessment of general competence.
Some professional bodies may have additional requirements to
this streamlining.
If you are uncertain which professional body to join, the
Engineering Council can provide information to help you choose an
appropriate body.
As part of your application you will be required to submit the
following documents, in addition to a professional body application
form:
- Detailed curriculum vitae of experience since graduation,
indicating the levels of responsibility held
- Record of current continuing professional development
- Evidence of registration on the IntPE (confirmation may be
sought)
- References from two persons who have a personal knowledge of
your competence as a professional engineer
