The Armours & Brasiers supports and champions excellence and endeavour in the fields of education and research in Materials Science and Metallurgy, through annual achievement awards and travel grants. The purpose of the awards is to stimulate interest and raise the profile of Materials Science and Metallurgy with a view to engaging young people and promoting the industry.
The awards open for applications (with a deadline of 31 March) are:
Final Year PhD student - £1000
The winning student must be a final year PhD student, have a significant quality and quantity of published papers or papers in the process of being published, have shown evidence of the novelty of work and the communication of the science, have shown evidence of transition to independence
BEng/BSc Student - £750
The winning student will have recently completed a BEng/BSc. The winner will have demonstrated excellent examination results at undergraduate level including a high mark and commendation in a prescribed project report, evidence to show meticulous attention to detail in carrying out practical work, clarity in the presentation of results and sound reasoning in reaching conclusions. The winner will have shown academic and personal promise during their academic studies.
MSc Student - £750
The prize will be awarded to the student who has performed consistently overall in the module section of courses offered in any one year.
STEM Ambassador of the Year - £500
This Award recognises significant voluntary contribution to the STEM Ambassador Programme in the field of materials joining and structural integrity.
Travel grants of £500 - £1000 to assist towards travel and subsistence. The aim of the grant is to allow post graduate students, undertaking studies in materials joining and structural integrity, to attend an international conference relevant to their studies. Attendance at the conference should endow the student with a beneficial academic and networking experience.
