Guide to going global

Worldwide, there are now several thousand men and women who are listed on the International Register of Professional Engineers and who thus have the right to the title IntPE. A new leaflet from ECUK - which maintains the Register's UK section - explains how the title came about, who is eligible to acquire it and why they would want to. In the UK, applicants must already be registered as Chartered Engineers (CEng).

The International Register was created in 2001 by the Engineers' Mobility Forum (EMF). This comprises ECUK and the national engineering organisations of Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA.

The IntPE title has particular appeal for those engineers who are looking to ply their trade overseas. The benefits it brings range from recognition of academic qualifications to immediate membership of a country's national engineering organisation, which may be a pre-requisite for gaining employment.

Copies of the leaflet can be downloaded at:  www.engc.org.uk/documents/UKEMFIntPE.pdf or requested from international@engc.org.uk.

About the Engineering Council

The Engineering Council holds the national registers of Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Chartered Engineers (CEng) and Information and Communication Technology Technicians (ICTTech).  It also sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. By this means it is able to ensure that employers, government and wider society – both at home and overseas – can have confidence in the skills and commitment of registrants.

To apply for the EngTech, IEng, CEng or ICTTech titles an individual must be a member of one of the 36 engineering institutions and societies currently licensed by the Engineering Council to assess candidates. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess a range of technical and personal competences and are also committed to keeping these up-to-date, and to behaving in a professionally and socially responsible manner.
