The Engineering Council and many of its licensed institutions (PEIs) will be attending The National Engineering and Construction Recruitment Exhibition (NECR) in Birmingham on 26 & 27 November 2010.

The upcoming exhibition sees the launch of the Professional Development Hub, the newest free advisory feature for visitors to the exhibition. Exhibiting together in this area, the Engineering Council and 12 professional engineering institutions* will be on hand to advise visitors about their professional development, providing information about membership and professional registration.

These organisations will be joining an impressive range of leading engineering and construction companies recruiting at the exhibition, including ARM, BAE Systems, Boeing United Kingdom, Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, Cummins, GE Aircraft Engine Services, General Dynamics, Jacobs, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, Messier-Dowty, Network Rail and Sharp Laboratories. Exhibitors will be looking for candidates across all disciplines among the thousands of experienced skilled professionals and graduates seeking new careers or their next step at the UK's largest engineering and construction recruitment event.

Jon Prichard, CEO of the Engineering Council says, "Through our involvement in the NECR we are looking forward to the opportunity to provide visitors with support and advice on professional career development and qualifications.  Formal recognition of competence is so important for today's engineers, to differentiate themselves and face the challenges of a highly competitive and ever-changing industry."

In addition to the Professional Development Hub, the exhibition offers many valuable services to help visitors to develop their careers and gain advice on their job search. Experts within the Careers Advice Lounge will offer personalised advice on all aspects of finding the perfect job and how to promote yourself to prospective employers, and one-to-one consultations at the CV Clinic will give top tips on perfecting a CV. In addition, free half-hour group sessions within the Interview Clinic will give visitors individual and practical advice on how to approach an interview and invaluable tips on how to demonstrate the qualities recruiters are looking for.

There are also a wide variety of free presentations throughout both days of the exhibition, offering invaluable careers advice and information on opportunities at the UK's leading engineering and construction companies. They provide advice on professional development, interview preparation, effective interview skills, selling yourself, how the application process works for recruiters, what the company culture is like and how to get your CV to the top of the pile.

The Women in Engineering Forum, supported by the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET (science, engineering and technology), will be taking place at the NECR on 26 November 2010. Offering women at all stages of their career the chance to share experiences, make new contacts and hear about exciting new vacancies, the Women in Engineering Forum provides an invaluable networking opportunity.

For final-year university students, University Challenge gives teams across the country the chance to compete against each other to design, build and test their inventions in a challenging task to win a prize of £750†. Watching the teams in action is both educational and entertaining! To enter a team please email necr@vmgl.com or call 020 8394 5206.

Scott Bannerman, Director of Venture Marketing Group, which organises the National Engineering & Construction Recruitment Exhibition, commented: "The addition of the Professional Development Hub brings a new dimension to the quality of advice and support available to visitors at the exhibition. Alongside the range of leading recruiters, the presence of the Engineering Council and professional engineering institutions contributes to NECR's status as the industry's most respected recruitment event.

"A day at this exhibition is the perfect solution for anyone, whether at graduate level or at an advanced stage in their career."

About the Engineering Council

The Engineering Council holds the national registers of Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Chartered Engineers (CEng) and Information and Communication Technology Technicians (ICTTech).  It also sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. By this means it is able to ensure that employers, government and wider society – both at home and overseas – can have confidence in the skills and commitment of registrants.

To apply for the EngTech, IEng, CEng or ICTTech titles an individual must be a member of one of the 36 engineering institutions and societies currently licensed by the Engineering Council to assess candidates. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess a range of technical and personal competences and are also committed to keeping these up-to-date, and to behaving in a professionally and socially responsible manner.
