Engineering and the Web

If you found this page by typing "engineering", engineer" or chartered engineer" you are not alone. Google UK rates this page 2nd out of 325 million pages it catalogues for engineering and 1st (out of 525,000) for "chartered engineer".

Our site was developed to try to answer the most frequently asked questions about registration as a professional engineer or technician - and to make it easy to find further advice and guidance - not least from the 36 UK institutions with whom we work.

The three years since ECUK took over the register from the former Engineering Council, have seen the internet develop and mature. In common with most public organisations we are reviewing our website and hope to re-launch it with a clearer interface and more colourful graphics, very shortly. We will not be changing the breadth of data and links we have achieved, just making them easier to find.

In the meantime, if you forget or lose our website address, simply type "engineer" into Google (7th out of 62,000,000).

About the Engineering Council

The Engineering Council holds the national registers of Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Chartered Engineers (CEng) and Information and Communication Technology Technicians (ICTTech).  It also sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. By this means it is able to ensure that employers, government and wider society – both at home and overseas – can have confidence in the skills and commitment of registrants.

To apply for the EngTech, IEng, CEng or ICTTech titles an individual must be a member of one of the 36 engineering institutions and societies currently licensed by the Engineering Council to assess candidates. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess a range of technical and personal competences and are also committed to keeping these up-to-date, and to behaving in a professionally and socially responsible manner.
