Mechanical Engineering graduate at Corus
Josephine Allen from Corby in
the East Midlands is the
first participant in the MSc Professional Engineering. Jo
works for Corus Tubes as a Control Engineer
where she is responsible for a
wide range of engineering activities on a mill producing Cold
Formed steel tubes. She studied for an honours degree in Mechanical
Engineering at the University of Sheffield and joined Corus in
2005.
Following a visit to a Corus
steel plant during her
undergraduate course, Jo saw the company as an large
international industry which would provide her with an exciting
challenge and early responsibility, coupled with the
support she would need to progress to
Chartered Engineering status. According to
Jo "Corus recognise the
value of Chartered Engineers to their
business, and are prepared to support me to
achieve this through their programme
of Continuous Professional Development".
Jo has chosen to enrol on Kingston's MSc Professional Engineering
course for a whole range of
reasons, but primarily because of
its relevance to her job.
"The idea of doing study on
top of work, just for the
purpose of studying, did not appeal to me; it
would only increase my workload for no
extra benefit. However this course
will tie in with my work, support it and give it
structure. Everything I learn will help me in my job, in particular
the chance to review and reflect on actual important
practical stuff …."

Jo also sees the benefit of the course to Corus: "My
training manager was very keen for me to do this course. In
discussions with Kingson staff she quickly saw its value to the
company without the need for me to take time away from work".
