Engineering Institutions

This new flexible work-based route enables working engineers to gain the necessary academic qualifications and develop the required competence for professional qualification without needing to leave employment.  The aim is to enable more individuals to seek registration with profession engineering institutions.

Successful completion of the learning programme results in an academic award.  Participants who demonstrate the required competences are also eligible to apply for professional review.

IET, IMechE and RAeS were invited to be involved in developing the model.  BCS, CIBSE, EI, ICE, IChemE, IED, IMarEST, InstMC, IOM3, IPEM, IWater and the SOE are now also involved, and others are expected to be involved as the programmes are rolled out.

Participating PEIs adhere to a Registration Protocol.  This has been developed to cover the period before there is sufficient programme output for the PEI to consider conferring accreditation on the academic award. ICE would normally expect to see that candidates using this process are registered on a formal ICE approved training scheme so that they have access to an approved Supervising Civil Engineer and regular support from the local Membership Development Officer.

PEI involvement - either staff or volunteer members - is crucial in ensuring that the individual's learning and development plan is in line with PEI requirements, and that the documentation meets their needs. A PEI may choose to work with a particular academic institution to meet a specific sectoral need.
