UK-SPEC
UK-SPEC is the standard
for recognition of professional engineers and professional
engineering technicians in the UK. The standard is published
by ECUK on behalf of the engineering profession.
Who owns UK-SPEC?
UK-SPEC is published by the Engineering Council UK, a chartered educational charity responsible for the UK register of Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers and Engineering Technicians. UK-SPEC was developed by panels representing professional engineering institutions, employers, and engineering educators. The Standards may only be changed and updated by the authority of the governing Board of ECUK, whose members come from each of these stakeholder groups.
The Standard explains the value of becoming recognised as an Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer, or Chartered Engineer. It describes the requirements that have to be met for registration, and gives examples of ways of doing this. The standard should enable individuals and employers to find out whether they or their staff can meet the requirements, and explains the steps necessary to achieve national registration. Professional Engineers and Engineering Technicians carry many responsibilities, including the need to observe a professional code of conduct. These are described here, together with advice on how to maintain registration.
Implementation
UK-SPEC came into force on 1 March 2004 and was republished on 18 December 2008.
Anyone who was working towards registration under the previous SARTOR 3 rules before 1 March 2004 will now be considered under UK-SPEC.
Institutions use the UK-SPEC Regulations for Registration to assess applications or registration. This is available for download on the right of this page. Many Institutions include additional or interpretive requirements. Intending applicants for registration are encouraged to contact their chosen Institution directly.
As UK-SPEC does not impose any extra requirements on applicants, anyone who was working towards registration under the previous SARTOR 3 rules will now be considered under UK-SPEC. The new arrangements for assessing people without exemplifying academic qualifications, including the possibility of submitting a technical report, became operative on 1 March 2004.
