My name is Melissa Riley and I work as a project leader in the surface
engineering group at TWI Ltd. I graduated from Birmingham University in 1996
with a B. Medical Science degree in Biomaterials. I moved to the Metallurgy and
Materials department to do a PhD on the use of magnets in biomedical
applications, in particular the use of magnetic systems in dentistry.

Following my PhD, I did a post-doc contract at Bradford University working on
surface engineered bearing surfaces for hip replacements. This was followed by
an industrial secondment and employment at DePuy International Ltd working on
coatings for knee implants. I then joined TWI, where I manage a wide range of
projects and provide technical expertise in the areas of thermal spraying,
coating technologies and biomaterials.
I recently achieved Chartered Engineer status and became a professional member
of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. I was keen to get MIMMM and
CEng status and had been working on the application during in my previous job.
TWI encourage their staff to have professional qualifications. After waiting
for my degree to be approved by the Engineering Council I was invited for
interview and was successful in my application.
CEng was an important achievement for me especially as having a medical science
background I wanted to prove my capabilities in materials and engineering and
therefore gain respect from my peers. Even if you have an unusual background
CEng is still achievable and I would recommend working towards it.
